As fans of serious digital art product know, the full conceptual power of what’s offered in bit colour mapped images proves its excellence, in fact excels it when that spark of the unique, when you hold a printed version of the digitised work in your hands leaps out as if unbounded from the form you first saw it in.

The 2014 Masters Mashup Calendar is a stunning compilation of art from the widely popular The Daily Dalek blog by Tone Cartoons. The year 2014 features 13 Dalek inspired art works that span the gamut of contemporary art history in gripping fashion, most particularly in pieces which reference Magritte, Dali and the Constructivist and Deconstructivist movements.

The choice of glossy heavy gsm paper allows details of works blending digital and hand drawn work to offer another layer of magic. This most particularly applies to ‘American Dalek’ (April), ‘The Extermination of Gustav Kaled’ (September), ‘Dalek Van Eyck’ (july) and ‘Salvador Dalek’ (May).

A particular favourite of mine is ‘Dalek Deconstructivism’ (June), my birth month.

It’s this spirited fusion of the legendary Dalek, terror through millennia of the Dr Who universe, with the greatest ideas of art and popular culture, that makes this more than just another novelty calendar. It has everything you might find in a print series of Dali or other… and something else. A visual testament to an image, a character who inspired vivid fear and sparked imaginations over 50 years of Dr Who, in which you see that creature in a new light, comic largely, and so more. I’ll be keeping mine always.. 2014 is a milestone year for me. And for the art of these genuine works of artistic fusion. Not mere prints by any stretch of the imagination.
